Frank Alex Wiley.png

Frank Alex Wiley

$2500

  • Alex was 14th in the 110 High Hurdles as a senior at the 3A state meet, runner-up at the sectionals, and third in the DVC to two all-state athletes. Losing the outdoor portion of his junior season and the indoor portion of his senior season certainly takes some of the accomplishments away that he would have traditionally have experienced. No Illinois Prep Top Times, experience. No varsity indoor DVC meet and only 1 outdoor varsity DVC meet. His competition was extremely limited as we did not have our full schedule of invites and the multitude of teams and athletes he would have traditionally been able to compete against. I was most impressed that throughout the quarantine during Covid, I had multiple schools complaining to me that my guys (mostly just one guy) kept sneaking on their track to practice hurdles. Alex was bound and determined to develop into a great athelete.

ItzelGarcia.png

Itzel Garcia

$2500

  • Itzel Garcia is a four-year varsity athlete for Track and Field, her last year serving as captain. She has been DVC all-conference. She has been able to balance school, work, and track, graduating with a 3.3 GPA. Her coaches describe her as a "Pacman" that goes after everything put in front of her. Itzel really enjoys the competition and always has such a positive attitude on the track. Itzel will be the first in her family to attend college. She plans to continue being a shining example for her younger siblings. With all of her extracurriculars she shows that you can excel in the classroom, athletics and can still serve the community.

Elizabeth Barbosa

$2500

Elizabeth Barbosa is a four year high school track athletel and even three years in middle school. In high school she was a 400 meter runner and a member of the 4x4 team. Once she even completed an 800! One of Elizabeth’s most outstanding achievements is getting a double pr at her last indoor conference meet. She loves the 400 because of how it makes her like she really must work for the results of her race. “It’s one of those things where your mindset was such a vital part of your race” and it taught her how to get out of her head and leave everything out on the track. Although she won’t be continuing track in college, she’ll always remember her coaches and teammates and what she’s learned about herself while competing for Waubonsie.

Hailey Mitchell

$2500

My name is Hailey Mitchell and I’m graduating from Waubonsie Valley High School. I have been on the track and field team for the past four years. My favorite memories from WV track include cheering on my teammates and reaching new PRs. Being a part of the team has taught me resilience, confidence, and the ability to push myself. I’m also involved in many other activities at Waubonsie including the gymnastics team, student council, and the Educators Rising club. My involvement on the track team and other Waubonsie activities has helped my high school career to be very enjoyable and memorable. Next year I will be attending the University of Wisconsin Madison to major in elementary education. I’m very grateful for everything I’ve learned through my track career at Waubonsie.

Dear Coach Steven Edwards Scholarship Committee, My gratitude for your extremely generous $2,500 scholarship offer cannot be properly expressed in a letter. Thank you so much for aiding my efforts to fund my schooling, I was extremely happy to learn I was selected to receive this scholarship. Although currently undecided, I am tentatively planning to major in either economics or religion at Hillsdale College. Through the economics and business courses I have taken this year, I have discovered a practical subject I seriously enjoy learning about, and with my strong faith base as a Christian, I hope I can use my talents to positively impact the lives of those around me. In addition, I will be continuing my athletic career in both Cross Country and Track & Field at Hillsdale. I’m beyond thrilled I get to continue to contribute to a positive team culture and to push my limits at the collegiate level. Learning from and sharing my own knowledge with others and testing the capabilities of my body are what truly make me feel alive and self-actualized. I also currently volunteer as lead audiovisual technician, associate pastor, and backup vocalist for Front Porch Church, a church designed specifically for those with special needs. It makes me very excited for my future at Hillsdale, where opportunities to serve those in the community who are often overlooked or underserved are even more present. Your gracious impact on how I finance my time at college will give me the freedom to do what I love: to learn tirelessly, to work towards glory on the track, and to serve others in humility. I believe in my hands, the Coach Edwards scholarship will have a powerful return on its investment in how I give back to my community at Hillsdale.

Sincerely,

Zachery Self
